Systematic_&_nonsystematic_nomenclature Slide 3 This is an example of how complicated the naming of compounds can get. It shows what to look for when naming a compound.

First, the principal group, which in this case is the carboxylic acid.

Then you look for the part of the structure called the parent hydride, which is the structure that contains the principal group (in this case cyclohexane). Finally you name the rest of the substituents. Sometimes you have to use brackets, which go from ( ) to to { } if needed.
